What's This Mail?

Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 2026

Overview

What's This Mail? is designed with privacy as a core principle. All document processing happens entirely on your iPhone. No document content is uploaded to any server.

What We Do Not Collect

  • Document images or scans
  • OCR text extracted from documents
  • Analysis results or document summaries
  • Account numbers, SSNs, or personal identifiers from scanned mail
  • Names, addresses, or phone numbers from scanned mail
  • Your location
  • Your contacts (unless you explicitly add a trusted person locally)

This Website (vs. the App)

The privacy guarantees above describe the app, which processes all of your mail entirely on your device. This marketing website (whatsthismail.com) is separate and uses Google Analytics to measure aggregate visitor traffic (such as page views and approximate region) so we can improve the site. It never has access to your scanned mail, which never leaves your device. You can block analytics with your browser’s privacy settings or an ad/tracker blocker.

How the App Works

  1. Scanning: You use your iPhone camera to photograph physical mail letters.
  2. OCR: Apple Vision framework reads text from the photo on your device.
  3. Analysis: The app classifies the document and extracts key information (dates, amounts, sender) using on-device processing.
  4. Results: You see plain-English cards explaining what the mail appears to be.

At no point in this process does your document content leave your device.

Data Stored Locally

The following data is stored locally on your device and encrypted:

  • Scanned letter images
  • Text extracted from letters (OCR results)
  • Analysis results (document type, amounts, dates, risk flags)
  • Trusted person names and contact info (if you add them)
  • Reminders you create
  • Feedback you submit

Data Sharing

The app only shares data when you explicitly choose to:

  • Native iOS share sheet: When you tap "Share", you choose the destination (Messages, Mail, AirDrop, etc.). The app creates the share content locally and hands it to iOS. No server link is created.
  • Calendar events: If you choose to add a reminder to your calendar, the app creates a local calendar event via EventKit.

Subscriptions

Subscription purchases are processed by Apple through StoreKit. The app does not have access to your payment information. Apple handles all payment processing, receipt validation, and subscription management.

Model Downloads

If your device supports local AI model inference, the app may download a model file over your internet connection. This download contains only model weights, not user data, and does not include any of your scanned documents or analysis results. It is stored locally on your device.

Crash Reports

If crash reporting is enabled, it collects only app version, device model, OS version, and crash stack traces. Crash reports never contain document images, OCR text, account numbers, or document summaries.

Data Deletion

You can delete your data at any time from Settings: delete individual scanned letters, delete all scans and analysis results, delete the downloaded AI model, or delete all app data. When you delete data, it is permanently removed from your device.

Children's Privacy

The app does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new privacy policy in the app.
