What does What’s This Mail do?
You take a photo of a confusing letter and the app explains it in plain English: what kind of mail it is, whether money is owed, the due date, what to do next, and whether it looks like a scam. It is built for older adults and the family members who help them.
Is my mail private? Does anything get uploaded?
Nothing is uploaded. All reading and analysis happen entirely on your phone — the photo, the text, and the AI result never leave the device and we never see them. No account is required to start, and your saved letters are stored encrypted on the device.
How does it understand the letter — does it need internet?
No internet is required. On-device OCR reads the text (Apple Vision on iPhone, ML Kit on Android) and an on-device AI model explains it: Qwen 2.5 on iPhone and the built-in Gemini Nano on supported Android phones. If the AI model isn’t available, a built-in rules engine still gives a safe answer, so it works offline and on a plane.
Can it catch scams aimed at seniors?
Yes. It recognizes 80+ scam patterns — gift-card and wire-transfer demands, fake IRS/Social Security/FBI letters, prize and lottery fraud, tech-support and QR-code phishing, and more — in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Tagalog, and Arabic. Which phones does it work on?
iPhone on iOS 17 or later, and Android 12 or later. The generative AI uses the built-in Gemini Nano on capable Android phones (such as Pixel 8 and newer, Galaxy S24 and newer); other phones use the private on-device rules engine instead.
Does it give legal, medical, or financial advice?
No. It helps you understand a letter and decide what to do, and it always encourages verifying with the real sender or a trusted person. It is independent and not affiliated with Medicare, Social Security, the IRS, USPS, AARP, or any agency or insurer.
Can I keep and organize my mail?
Yes. Every scan is saved to a private, searchable archive grouped by urgency, with a bill calendar, due-date reminders, per-letter notes, on-device Q&A, and export to PDF, CSV, or JSON. You set how long data is kept, and you can delete everything with one tap.
